UK Charts Course to F-35 Full Operational Capability
May 05, 2025
The United Kingdom's F-35 fleet aims to declare full operational capability during the most formidable deployment of UK airpower this century.
A Carrier Strike Group led by HMS Prince of Wales and her F-35Bs set sail last month for Operation Highmast, a major global deployment featuring two F-35B squadrons from the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force for the first time.
"Operation Highmast marks a pivotal milestone for the Lightning program," said Group Captain Butcher, commander of the Lightning Air Wing. "We are on track to achieve full operational capability for F-35 in the UK, with the ability to deploy two squadrons to the maritime operating base."
Wherever They May Roam
While the F-35s have already "proven their mettle in operational settings," the milestone means the UK can conduct continuous F-35 operations with multiple squadrons from land and sea, which significantly enhances its rapid response capabilities.

What They're Saying
“The [F-35] is just absolutely incredible…the capability that the fifth Gen aircraft brings is just incredible, absolutely eye-watering,” said Royal Navy Capt. Colin McGannity, Air Wing Commander, UK Carrier Strike Group.
“Partnering with other F-35 nations, especially our NATO allies, significantly extends our reach and potency around the world," noted Lt. Col. Carty, commander of 617 Squadron.
Fueling Economic Prosperity Throughout the UK
The F-35’s impact doesn’t stop at game-changing capabilities. The F-35 program is also playing a key role in strengthening the UK’s economy.
It supports over 20,000 jobs across the UK, fostering innovation and helping develop vital defense-related skills across all regions.
